Challenges
Bilingual audience in a tourist area
The café serves both Spanish-speaking locals and international visitors, while staff do not speak English — making a bilingual menu essential.
Operational bottleneck
Only one printed menu was available for a 12-table café, slowing down order-taking and reducing efficiency.
Unstable content
Menu items and categories were still evolving during the design process, requiring frequent updates.
Limited assets and budget
There was no budget for user research or professional photography, and only a few dishes had images.
Technical and time constraints
The digital menu needed to be launched within days using a free, easy-to-maintain no-code solution.
Design solutions
Readable, bilingual menu structure
Designed a clear hierarchy and layout that works equally well in Spanish and English, reducing cognitive load for customers.
Lightweight visual identity
Created a simple brand direction inspired by:
the café’s green entrance banner
Brazilian color references (green and yellow)
This added personality without overwhelming the content.
Typography optimized for scanning
Retained a serif font for the restaurant name to maintain continuity with existing signage
Used all caps only for category titles
Selected highly readable sans-serif fonts for menu items to improve clarity and legibility
Mobile-first digital menu
Designed and implemented a responsive digital menu optimized for mobile viewing, avoiding PDF formats that perform poorly on phones.

Outcomes & impact
Improved operational efficiency
All 12 tables now have QR codes linking to the digital menu, eliminating wait times and reducing staff dependency.
Better accessibility for tourists
Customers can easily switch between Spanish and English, improving the experience for international visitors.
Positive client and customer feedback
The client highlighted the print menu’s clarity and modern feel, while customers responded positively to the ease of use and readability.
Future-ready solution
The no-code setup allows the client to:
update menu items independently
add photos later when available
